Tax returns and tax accounting
Tax returns prepared from a file somebody already understands
Company, trust, sole trader and individual returns, prepared by the people who already work in your Xero file. We reconcile before we prepare, which means fewer questions at the end and no surprises after lodgement. Returns are prepared under Nikoletta, who founded the practice, and every one is reviewed with you before anything is lodged. Tax returns and tax accounting handled from the same file we already keep, so nothing has to be explained twice.
What goes wrong without it
The return is the last step, and it is where the year catches up with you
Most of what makes a return painful happened months earlier, in a file nobody looked at until it was time to lodge.
The first conversation is in October
By the time the year has ended, every decision that could have changed the outcome has already been made. There is nothing left to plan, only to report.
Whoever prepares the return has never seen the file
So the year gets explained from scratch, the same questions get asked again, and the coding decisions made along the way never reach the person relying on them.
The accounts were never reconciled first
A return prepared over an unreconciled ledger is a tidy document built on a number nobody has checked. The amendment is worse than the delay would have been.
What you get
Prepared, reviewed, then lodged
Accounts reconciled and reviewed before the return is prepared
Company, trust, sole trader and individual returns prepared and lodged
A plain-English walk through of the result before anything goes to the ATO
Anything we find along the way that is worth fixing for next year
Contact through the year rather than only after it has ended
A conversation before year end, while the numbers can still be acted on
How it works
Three steps, in this order
1
A conversation before we start
What the business did this year, what else is going on, and anything coming that changes the picture. Income sources outside the business affect the outcome and are the thing most often left out.
2
Reconcile, then prepare
The underlying accounts are agreed first. If we already do your bookkeeping this is already done, and if we do not, this is where most of the questions get answered.
3
Review with you, then lodge
We walk through the result before it goes anywhere, so the first time you see the number is not on a notice of assessment.
Who it suits
Who this is for
Companies and trusts
Where the structure matters and the return has to agree with the accounts.
Sole traders
Business and personal income in one return, done once and done properly.
Medical and allied health
Practitioner income, service fees and the entities behind them.
Not-for-profits
Reporting obligations that are not the same as a small company's.
Questions we answer every week
Questions we are asked most
Do I have to use your bookkeeping to get my return done?
No. If we already keep your books there is nothing to prepare and the return is faster and cheaper for it. If we do not, we reconcile the accounts first and tell you what we found before we prepare anything.
When should we talk, if not at tax time?
Before the year ends, while the numbers can still be changed. A conversation in April or May about estimated profit and anything coming up is worth more than any amount of work in October.
Who actually prepares and lodges the return?
Returns are prepared and lodged under Nikoletta, our founder and senior accountant. You will speak to the people who work in your file rather than somebody meeting it for the first time.
What do you need from me?
Less than you would expect if we do your bookkeeping. If we do not, we send a short list once we have spoken, so you are not guessing what to gather.
